“Showcasing the cultural, stylistic and linguistic diversity” of 50 rappers from Africa, Europe, North and South America and Asia on one mixtape sounds like a great idea in theory. But any multicultural mashup is potentially also a disastrous recipe in homogeneity. No such problems for Nomadic Wax’s Filipino-American DJ Boo, though. It’s a mixtape, so he isn’t obsessed with overpolished production. Instead he simply takes the 16-bar verses in each MC’s respective mother tongue and skillfully soundtracks them to aptly old school hip-hop samples that let the rhythmic nuances of each Diasporic dialectic flow.
